OLYMPIC AND PARALYMPIC ATHLETES AND COACHES WILL BE VACCINATED AGAINST COVID-19 IN THE FRAMEWORK OF THEIR PARTICIPATION IN TOKYO 2020.

At the request of the International Olympic Committee and due to the degree of exposure to the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the members of the Argentine delegation that will represent the country will receive the vaccine.

The National Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports and the Argentine Olympic Committee (COA) communicate that the Olympic and Paralympic athletes qualified to compete in Tokyo, together with their coaches and assistants will be vaccinated against COVID-19 prior to the trip to participate in the games, after four years of preparation and training.

The decision was made at the request of the International Olympic Committee, the degree of exposure to the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the athletes' role in representing the country, and as a result of the evaluation carried out jointly by the Minister of Health, Carla Vizzotti; the Minister of Tourism and Sports, Matías Lammens; the President of the Argentine Olympic Committee, Gerardo Werthein, and the representatives of the COA Athletes' Committee, Paula Pareto and Santiago Lange.

The athletes have been preparing for more than four years for this event of international relevance, a period during which the National State accompanied them with a significant investment in scholarships, transfers and programs. In order to participate and represent the country in the Olympic Games, they comply with the protocols required to minimize exposure to the virus and are isolated from family and friends.

Since part of the delegation will start traveling in the first days of July, the vaccination operation will begin this week under the coordination of the National Ministry of Health. It is estimated that around 500 people will be vaccinated as part of this process.

It should be noted that countries such as the United States, Russia, China, Japan, Brazil, Germany, Australia, France, Italy, Spain, Mexico, Colombia and Peru have already started or will start vaccination plans aimed at athletes who have qualified for the competition.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, postponed for a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, are scheduled to be held from July 23 to August 8. Meanwhile, the Paralympic Games will take place from August 24 to September 5.

As athletes in Argentina access vaccination, information regarding this process will be provided.
