(ATR) Buenos Aires, Argentina and Santiago, Chile will go head-to-head to win the rights to host the 2023 Pan American Games.

The Pan American Sports Organization announced the two candidates on Feb. 1 in a letter sent to the 41 National Olympic Committees of PASO and seen by Around the Rings.

The bids were submitted by Gerardo Werthein and Neven Ilic, presidents of the Argentinean and Chilean Olympic Committees respectively.

The next milestone in the bidding process comes on April 30 when a payment of $50,000 is due to PASO leadership along with a completed application. Once the documents are received, each city will begin campaigning to win the votes of their fellow PASO members.

The election of the host city will take place in Lima, Peru at the end of 2017. ATR is told there is no set date for the 55th PASO General Assembly where the vote will take place.

It is likely the assembly would come after the September IOC Session where the host city of the 2024 Summer Olympics will be chosen.

Buenos Aires hosted the inaugural Pan Am Games in 1951 while Chile has never hosted the event. A bid from Santiago was narrowly beat by Lima’s bid to host the 2019 edition of the event.
