(ATR) Thomas Bach will meet leadership of the U.S. Olympic Committee and the Boston 2024 Olympic bid as well as former US PresidentBill Clinton, Around the Rings understands.
ATR is told that Bach will attend the Super Bowl in Glendale, Ariz., on Feb. 1. The glitzy spectacle of a football game will be broadcast on NBC this year. Bach will sit down with NBC Olympics host Bob Costas for a one-on-one interview to be broadcast during the Super Bowl pregame show.
On the sidelines of the NFL’s showpiece, Bach will meet senior executives from NBC and also officials from the TOP sponsors that are headquartered in the U.S.
The next day, Bach travels to Vail/Beaver Creek, Colorado for the start of the Alpine Ski World Championships. He’ll attend the opening ceremony and an official dinner.
On Feb. 3, the IOC president will be joined by USOC chairman Larry Probst and CEO Scott Blackmun and several IOC members to watch the women’s super G before he heads to USOC headquarters in Colorado Springs. That’s where Boston 2024’s new leadership can look to make an impression on Bach.
ATR understands that he is expected to meet with bid CEO Richard Davey and other senior bid officials at some point on Tuesday. Davey, secretary of transportation for Massachusetts from 2010 to 2014, replaced Dan O’Connell as bid CEO last week.
Earlier this month, Bach suggested Boston’s bid for the 2024 Olympics "will be a strong one".
"Bostonians are well known for their enthusiasm for sport and the city has a great heritage in sport, science and education," the IOC chief said. His remarks followed the USOC’s decision to nominate the city for the Games.
Also on Bach’s agenda for Feb. 3 is a visit the USOC Training Center where he will meet athletes before a USOC reception in the evening with staff and US federation heads.
On his U.S. trip, ATR is told that the IOC chief is also scheduled to meet former U.S. president Bill Clinton and Henry Kissinger, the last honorary member of the IOC. The date and location of these meetings is not yet confirmed.
