'Hubs' de vacunacion para hacer mas seguros los Juegos de Tokio

(ATR) Qatar y Ruanda comenzaron ya a vacunar con dosis de Pfizer/BioNTech a deportistas de África y Asia para incrementar el porcentaje de inmunizados en las delegaciones a los Juegos Olímpicos y Paralímpicos de Tokio 2020.

"Ambos centros ofrecerán la vacuna de Pfizer-BioNTech, en línea con el anuncio del COI del 6 de mayo de 2021 de la firma de un Memorando de Entendimiento (MoU) con Pfizer Inc. y BioNTech SE para donar dosis de la vacuna COVID-19 de las empresas a los participantes de los Comités Olímpicos y Paralímpicos Nacionales de todo el mundo", anunció el COI (Comité Olímpico Internacional).

"No podemos agradecer lo suficiente a los dos comités olímpicos nacionales (CONs), a sus gobiernos nacionales y a Pfizer su generosidad y su gran muestra de voluntad y apoyo. Los avances en la preparación del trabajo sobre el terreno han sido extraordinarios, y estas oportunidades adicionales de vacunación están permitiendo que los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio 2020 sean seguros no sólo para los participantes, sino también para el pueblo japonés", dijo James Macleod, Director de Relaciones con los CONs y Solidaridad Olímpica del COI.

La acción del COI va en paralelo con una similar que está encarando Panam Sports, el ente rector del deporte de las Américas, que desde fines de mayo está vacunando a sus atletas en hubs instalados en Miami y Houston. Panam Sports corre también con el costo de los pasajes aéreos, en un operativo que beneficia especialmente a los países más pequeños de la región, en los que la vacunación contra el covid-19 es lenta y escasa.

Los Juegos de Tokio, que debían celebrarse originalmente en 2020, enfrentan una importante oposición de parte de la ciudadanía japonesa en un país donde el proceso de vacunación avanza de forma muy lenta. El COI ya dio a entender que no ve razones hoy para suspender los Juegos, que aspira a celebrar de forma "segura" entre el 23 de julio y el 8 de agosto. Los Paralímpicos están previstos del 24 de agosto al 5 de septiembre.

El COI aseguró que el 75% de las personas que estarán dentro de la Villa Olímpica "ya están vacunadas o se han asegurado la vacunación". También hay "buenas razones para creer" que esta cifra será "muy superior al 80%" en el momento de los Juegos, añadió el COI.
