(ATR) More than 400 people in traditional dress welcomed the Olympic Torch Relay into the southwest of South Korea.
Twenty days into the 2018 relay the torch has entered the Jeolla region of South Korea. Jeolla is divided into two provinces, North and South, in the southwest of the peninsula.
The torch was in Suncheon Bay National Garden on Nov. 20, where a traditional dance was performed to welcome the torch. The dance was a "symbol of the wish for unity and harmony throughout the Winter Games," according to a release from PyeongChang 2018.
Visiting Suncheon represented one of the five pillars of the Games, the environment. According to PyeongChang 2018 the timing of the relay coincided with the time of when migratory birds come to Suncheon.
"When you think of the natural environment in Korea, the Suncheon Bay National Park is one of the most iconic and beautiful examples of our natural landscape, so it is the perfect location for our Olympic Torch Relay celebrations," Joo Ho Kim, Executive Vice President of Games Planning and Communications, said in a statement.
After leaving Suncheon the torch relay traveled to Gangjin near the extreme southwest of the country. After running throughout the city the relay reached Peace Plaza. The Plaza was built in honor of former South Korean President Dae Joong Kim winning the Nobel Peace Prize.
A video of the full relay from Gangjin can be seen here:
