Panasonic Chief Joins Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee

(ATR)The head of Panasonic Corporation is one of two new vice presidents to join the Tokyo Olympic organising committee.

Kazuhiro Tsuga said Monday he was "delighted and deeply honored" to be appointed to the post. "Leveraging the knowledge and experience I have accumulated throughout my career, I am looking forward to contributing first-hand to the delivery and celebrating the success of the Tokyo 2020 Games," he said.

Panasonichas been an IOC TOP sponsor since the global sponsorship program began in 1985. In February 2014, it became the first top-tier sponsor to sign through 2024.

Tsutomu Tomioka, state minister of the Cabinet Office in charge of the Tokyo Olympics, was named the other vice president and said he was "acutely aware of the great responsibility that the position brings".

"I am determined to exert my utmost efforts to forging even closer relations between the organising committee, the national government and all related parties, and to ensuring flawless preparations towards the successful delivery of the Tokyo 2020 Games," he said.

Tomioka took the government position in 2015.He also occupies the role of state minister of education, culture, sports, science and technology.

The appointments were announced after a Tokyo 2020 executive board meeting today.

Around the Rings is told that a decision was also made to create an advisory group to work on the details of the Rio 2016 handover ceremony in August when the Olympic baton passes to Tokyo.

Tokyo 2020 leaders also discussed Games legacy issues. An interim report on the Action & Legacy Plan will be released before the Rio Games.

"The expectations are rising for the 2020 Games," Tokyo 2020 president Yoshiro Mori told a press conference.

Last week, an IOC inspection team led by John Coates expressed satisfaction with the pace of preparations for the 2020 Olympics following a two-day project review.The IOC vice president said he not seen a city "more prepared" four years out from the Olympics: "We couldn't be happier."
