More Women for 2022 Olympic Winter Games

(ATR) The IOC wants as many as 45 percent of the athletes in the next Olympic Winter Games to be female.

Meeting June 27 in Lausanne the IOC Olympic Program Commission collected proposals from the winter federations, aimed at increasing the number of events for women..

The PyeongChang Winter Games registered 41 percent female. In Sochi 2014 the number was 40.3 percent.

The suggestions are aimed at the Beijing Olympic Winter Games in 2022 and those in 2026, to be chosen next year.

A meeting of the commission in May 2019 "will make a deeper discussion," Jose Perurena, who represents the International Association of World Games on the commission, told Around The Rings after the meeting.

According to Perurena "there was no decision making" at the the meeting.

Franco Carraro, IOC member in Italy chairs the 22 member commission.

Perurena, IOC member in Spain is president of the international federation for canoe as well as the World Games Association.

He saysthe commitment and priority for gender balance is driven by Olympic Agenda 2020, the strategic roadmap for the Olympic Movement adopted soon after Thomas Bach became IOC president in 2013.

A report on the past Olympic Games in PyeongChang and preparations for the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires were also on the agenda of the Lausanne meeting.

The YOG in the Argentine capital October 6 to 18 will be the first IOC sports event to include equal numbers of men and women athletes.
