Steve Stoute asume el cargo de Presidente del ODECABE

(ATR) El Presidente del Comité Olímpico de Barbados, Steve Stoute, es el primer presidente de la Organización Deportiva Centroamericana y del Caribe de la Commonwealth del Caribe.

Stoute, 75, está reemplazando al ex presidente de ODECABE, Héctor Cardona, quien murió el 16 de junio. Como primer vicepresidente, Stoute ha sido nombrado presidente interino de acuerdo con los estatutos de ODECABE.

"No habrá ninguna elección especial" aclaró a Around the Rings desde San Juan, Puerto Rico, el jefe de prensa de ODECABE, Carlos Uriarte. "En agosto habrá una reunión del Ejecutivo en Barranquilla, Colombia, para confirmar en el terreno los avances de los preparativos de los Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe en el verano de 2018 y allí Stoute manejará ese encuentro como presidente."

Stoute ahora se convierte en el sexto presidente de ODECABE desde su fundación en 1959 durante los Juegos Panamericanos de Chicago. Los presidentes anteriores fueron: Julio Enrique Monagas (Puerto Rico), José Beracasa (Venezuela), Germán Rieckehoff (Puerto Rico), José Joaquín Puello (República Dominicana) y el fallecido Héctor Cardona (Puerto Rico) quien ocupó el cargo de 2003 a 2017.

El mandato de Stoute se prolongará hasta 2019, cuando la ODECABE realizará elecciones para elegir una nueva directiva para el ciclo deportivo del 2019 hasta 2023, lapso en el que los Juegos regionales en Panamá en 2022 ocuparán la máxima atención de la dirigencia de Centroamérica y el Caribe.

Stoute es la única persona del Caribe Oriental que obtiene la Orden Olímpica por parte del Comité Olímpico Internacional, según el sitio web del ODECABE.
