"When we are lucky enough to organise an event in honour of champions, we have to give our best and overcome all obstacles to succeed. COVID, lockdown, quarantine, clusters, curfew... We had to face all of these obstacles. It is for these reasons that I am very proud and pleased to have been able to maintain SPORTEL Awards 2020, an event that has managed to go ahead in a decimated calendar, racked by the cancellations of major events," explains Laurent Puons, CEO of Monaco Mediax.
To kick off the event, SPORTEL Awards organised a day dedicated to esports on Monday 26 October, in collaboration with Webedia and Monaco Esports Federation. SPORTEL Awards featured exceptional showmatches with the greatest champions and hosted the grand final of the French League of Legends, with the unexpected victory of the new French Champion, Team Misfits Premier, by a score of 3-0.
"This is a first foot in the world of esports for my team, and not just any, as this was the first esports event with a live audience since March. It is a very promising and expanding sector, which has now acquired the necessary maturity to be developed for the SPORTEL convention in February 2021" says Laurent Puons.
The SPORTEL Awards Ceremony, in an intimate setting, was an opportunity to get away from it all during a star-studded evening featuring a parade of sports personalities on the Grimaldi Forum stage, who rewarded and honoured the recipients of the night. The calibre of the competing works once again affirmed the importance of this international competition. Despite the health situation and the complete interruption of sporting events for several months, the jury composed of Clarisse Agbegnenou (President), Jean Baptise Alaize, Roberto Alegria, Gérard Houllier, H.E. Mrs. Yvette Lambin-Berti, Frédéric Michalak and Nathalie Péchalat were able to deliberate on images from international productions and books that highlight the beauty of the sporting gesture.
In addition to these two major events, SPORTEL Awards also organised a number of meetings between the public and sports personalities in attendance, including a conference on women's football in collaboration with the magazine "Les Sportives" with Frédérique Jossinet, Jessica Houara-d'Hommeaux, Laure Boulleau; a training session for the youngsters of AS Monaco Rugby with Frédéric Michalak and finally a special session for AS Monaco Swimming Team with Malia Metella.
"This event has been a great success, with a very involved jury and great sports champions who were eager to meet their fans. In the space of a few hours, over three days, we succeeded to forget this heavy atmosphere and offer them an unexpected interlude. I would like to thank the SPORTEL Awards team who has worked tirelessly to ensure that we were able to organise this event in the best possible conditions and in strict compliance with the health standards in force," concludes Loris Menoni, Executive Director of SPORTEL Awards.
