Almaty Hosts 28th Winter Universiade -- Photodesk

(ATR) 175 athletes from 57 countries are competing in 12 different sports.

(ATR) The 28th Winter Universiade is currently underway in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

The competition kicked off after a torch relay which reached 16 Kazakhstan regions including Astana, Aktobe and Kyzylorda.

The opening ceremony of the Universiade was held on Jan. 29 at the Almaty Arena. The ceremony began with a light show celebration along with an array of performances.

The Universiade features nearly 2,000 athletes from 57 countries competing in 12 different sports including snowboarding, biathlon, figure skating, ice hockey and more.

The snowboarding and alpine skiing events began the Universiade on Jan. 30.

The competitions will conclude on Feb. 8.
