IOC Commissions Meet in Olympic Capital -- Monday Memo

(ATR) The International Olympic Committee is hosting a slew of its commission meetings this week at its headquarters in Lausanne.

The Athletes’ Commission kicked off a full week of meetings on Saturday, Nov. 5 along with the Medical and Scientific Commission. The Athletes’ Commission is the only of the 17 meetings that takes place over two days.

The Olympic Channel is the first commission to meet Monday morning while the Olympic Broadcasting Services, Sport and Active Society and Ethics Commissions also meet throughout the day. The Olympic Channel Commission meeting will be its first since its official launch on Aug. 21.

The Women in Sport Commission is the only one to meet on Tuesday following the Women and Sport Awards and Dinner Gala on Monday evening. The commission receives the award nominations for one person from each of the five continental associations and one on a global level and then chooses the winner.

Wednesday features the Olympic Truce Foundation Board, Public Affairs and Social Development, Sustainability and Legacy and Legal Affairs Commissions. The International Federation Forum also begins on Nov. 9 and concludes Nov. 11.

Thursday’s meetings focus on marketing with the IOC Television and Marketing, Marketing and Olympic Education Commissions.

The commission meetings conclude on Friday, Nov. 11 with the Athletes’ Entourage, Communications and Culture and Olympic Heritage Commissions.

Federations Come Together in Lausanne

The 10th edition of the International Federation Forum begins Nov. 9 in Lausanne at the Hotel Savoy.

The annual forum is hosted by SportAccord and will welcome all IFs for a three-day program featuring discussions on doping in sport, athlete health and how sport can make a difference. The theme of the 2016 IF Forum is the Power of Sport to Drive World Health.

IOC president Thomas Bach and the Mayor of Lausanne Gregoire Junod will welcome all delegates to the forum before the opening addresses from SportAccord Convention president Francisco Ricci Bitti and SportAccord president Patrick Baumann.

The first two days of the event will consist of keynote addresses, panel discussions and lectures while the final day will feature three workshops focusing on athlete health.

BBC journalist David Eades will serve as the master of ceremonies for the event that concludes on Nov. 11.

PyeongChang 2018 Holds World Press Briefing

The next host of the Winter Olympic Games will welcome the world’s media to South Korea from Nov. 8-10.

The PyeongChang 2018 world press briefing this week will be the only one that organizers stage in advance of the Winter Games.

The PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics will be staged from Feb. 9-25.

FIH to Choose Next Leader

The International Hockey Federation meets this week in Dubai, United Arab Emirates for part two of its ‘Hockey Revolution’ program.

The Hockey Revolution initiative is a 10-year strategy launched in October 2014 to raise the global status of field hockey. Part two of the Hockey Revolution conference takes place from Nov. 10-12 and includes the 45th FIH Congress on Nov. 12.

The congress features the election of FIH’s next president. Delegates will choose between David Balbirne, Narinder Batra and Ken Read to lead the federation for the next four years. FIH president Leandro Negre has led the federation since 2008.

United States Elects Next President

The United States will choose between Republican candidate Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Hilary Clinton on Tuesday, Nov. 8 as the next President of the United States.

The contentious campaign has lasted for more than a year as each candidate seeks to make their mark on American politics.

The outcome of the election could have implications on the U.S. bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics from Los Angeles, California.

Around the Rings will be speaking with sports leaders from the U.S. and around the world this week to discuss the impact of the election on the bid and which candidate would be more beneficial to Los Angeles 2024.
