Smart Cities and Sport Hopes for Biggest Event Yet -- Conferences and Conventions

(ATR) The Smart Cities and Sport Summit will act as a platform for cities to meet, interact, discuss and network.

The last edition of the Summit had over 250 participants representing over 60 cities and organizers are hoping to gain hundreds more this year, the Secretary General of the World Union of Olympic Cities Melanie Duparc tells Around the Rings.

Some of the topics that will be discussed at the summit will include how cities can associate their brands to international sports, health and the role of the city to promote an active lifestyle as well as strategies on how to use sport to develop cities.

A "Big Debate" will be held at the summit focusing on risks, opportunities and government in sport.

"Sport is often associated with different issues that are affecting international sports including doping, government issues and corruption. We will discuss how cities should react to these issues and how international sport can adapt themselves to insure that they can still find host cities for their events," Duparc says.

The summit will host a more interactive session called the "Master Class" which will teach cities how to design, communicate and measure their success.

Following the class the "toolbox" will highlight the practices of five cities in terms of designing and measuring their success.

One of the conferences newer sessions called the "Marketplace" will allow federations and members of world sports corporations the opportunity to network with cities.

"What we’re really trying to do is refer cities to new tools and ideas so they can implement them when they are back home," relays Duparc.

The Smart Cities and Sport Summit will be held on Oct.10 through Oct.12.

The 2017 summit will mark the first time the event will not be held in the city of Lausanne. The location of next year's summit will be announced during the conference.

MEI hosts Major Events Summit

The Major Events Summit will welcome 140 companies at the London Aquatic Center beginning on Oct. 12. The annual summit will be hosted by Major Events International (MEI).

Over two days the Summit will go into detailed discussion of topics including fan engagement, technology and safety & security.

Confirmed speakers at the summit thus far include the Selex ES & Finmeccanica vice president of strategic marketing Sir Brian Burridge and the head of strategy for ATOS Olympic & Major Events Fabrice Doreau.

Companies will also have the opportunity to observe technical demonstrations from businesses such as The Appointment Group, Enterprise control, Showcomms and more.

Following the first day of the Summit an awards dinner will be held to celebrate the contributions of suppliers, experts and event organizers in the major events market.

Some of last year’s recipients includeSelex ES for most significant security technology contribution to a recent major event and Arc International for most active MEI Member.

The Summit will conclude on Oct.13.

IWG reshapes Africa Women in Sport

The 6th annual Africa Women in Sport conference begins Oct.14 in Gaborone, Botswana.

The International Working Group on Women and Sport (IWG) will bring together 225 scholars, leaders, athletes as well as key sport organizations to examine ways to spread positive change for women and sport in Africa.

The theme of the conference this year is "Reshaping Africa Women and Sport".

The intensive two-day conference features keynote speakers, workshops and panel discussions exploringtopics such as the influence of culture and media and the effect it has on women in sport.

Thorough discussions of gender based violence in sport,promoting equal access to sport andmentor-ship and empowering of women in Africawill also be held in paralleled sessions.

Organizations such as the African Union (AU), ANOCA, IOC, The Commonwealth, Council of Europe, UN Women, UNESCO, TAFISA, Peace and Sport, NGO’s and Women in Sport Businesses are all expected to attend.

The Africa Women in Sport conference will conclude on Oct.15.

SPORTEL Awards Ceremony in October

The sports marketing and media business convention SPORTEL will be hosting the annual SPORTEL awards in October.

During the ceremony the best international sports videos and illustrated books will be rewarded.

A jury of Olympic icons and personalities of the sports and media industries will present the Golden Podium prize - an original piece created by French painter Raymond Moretti - along with the Sports Book prize.

Jury Members will include Olympic Boxing Champion Estelle Mossely and Paralympic Champion Richard Whitehead.

The awards ceremony will be held at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco on Oct. 25.
