Schools across Scotland will Step Up as part of Glasgow 2014’s annual Sport Your Trainers campaign and forge links with young people across the Commonwealth in a ground-breaking initiative.
Education Scotland is working in partnership with the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games to raise awareness among Scotland’s pupils of the 71 nations and territories in the Commonwealth, aimed at inspiring them to create links with schools in other countries and to learn more about each other.
The initiative will also encourage the young people to show-off their trainer style by participating in Sport Your Trainers. These activities will form part of the legacy of the Games.
Glasgow 2014 is asking Scots of all ages and abilities to support this year's campaign and set themselves a goal for a fitter and healthier lifestyle and to celebrate their achievements by wearing their trainers on Commonwealth Day, which this year falls on Monday 12th March. The campaign is backed by various celebrities and sports stars including TV presenter Carol Smillie, Commonwealth gold medal sprinter Kim Collins and Scottish 800m athlete Claire Gibson.
As part of the campaign, Scottish schools will be encouraged to be as active as possible on Commonwealth Day by walking, jogging, rowing, cycling, spinning, hopping or even skipping throughout the day.
Ahead of 12th March, Education Scotland will use their virtual education network Glow, to provide information on the Step Up challenge and possible Sport Your Trainers activities - all of which are linked to Curriculum for Excellence. Using Glow, schools will have the opportunity to take part in a special live online ‘Glow Meet’, where Scottish Pole Vaulter and Glasgow 2014 hopeful Jax Thoirs will answer questions on his sport and the Commonwealth Games from young people across Scotland.
The Meet will take place at Madison Primary School in Falkirk on Thursday 23rd February from 11am – 12 noon. Schools are encouraged to sign up at http://www.glasgow2014.com/sport_your_trainers.aspx as those interested in joining in the live question and answer session will need a Glow login to access the session.

This initiative will give pupils the opportunity to learn about the cultures, traditions and history of the many countries coming to Glasgow and Scotland in 2014."

Sport Your Trainers will act as a catalyst in helping our young people become more engaged in the Games and provide a ‘fun’ opportunity for them to get more active."
This is the second year of Sport Your Trainers which, last year, saw thousands of people across Scotland getting into the spirit of the Games, and putting their best foot forward by pledging their support for the campaign.
