Salzburg lost – but won respect
During its 2-year campaign, Salzburg 2014 was working hard and diligently towards one sole date: 4 July – that day, on which the IOC would make its decision of which city would have the honour to host the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games 2014.
Today, on 4 July, the Salzburg 2014 delegation was the second of the three bid cities to present its bid in a 45minute long presentation followed by a 15minute question and answer session. The presentation team, consisting of Prime Minister Alfred Gusenbauer, IOC member Leo Wallner, President and Chairman of Salzburg 2014, Heinz Schaden, Governor of the State of Salzburg, Gabi Burgstaller, Franz Klammer, Chairman International of Salzburg 2014 and Manuela Riegler, Ambassador of Salzburg 2014 and Bid Director Gernot Leitner. After a week of daily team and individual rehearsals the presenters performances were impressive, the movies shown during the presentation were breathtaking and moving. Thus, the feedback after the presentation of IOC members and the media was overwhelmingly positive.
A good basis for the whole delegation of Salzburg consisting of approx. 60 people, to look forward to the decision of the IOC members. Teamed up in the Mexico Lindo, a restaurant that Salzburg 2014 had rented out for the day of the decision, the team was informed that after a great, a dedicated bid campaign, they did not advance to the second round by a small margin of votes.
25 IOC members voted for Salzburg, 34 for Sochi and 36 for PyeongChang.

I would like to thank the Salzburg 2014 bid team and all its supporters: They did their absolute best, performed in those two years of our bid campaign to their utmost abilities and put their whole heart and a huge amount of working hours into this campaign. We have to realise that the IOC members have chosen a completely different games concept, but, we can fly home from Guatemala with pride into our campaign and with our heads held high. And many thanks and much appreciation for the great hospitality we received here in Guatemala. IOC member Willi Kaltschmitt and his team did a great job. And also to the Austrian School here in Guatemala. Friedrich Baaz and all his lovely pupils supported as in a fantastic way.”
