Staff from BAE Systems and members of crew from HMS Defender, the fifth Type 45 Destroyer built by the company, are showing their support for Glasgow 2014's Sport Your Trainers campaign. The ship, which is based at the company’s Scotstoun yard on the banks of the River Clyde, is affiliated to the City of Glasgow, a link that will endure for the next 35 years.
As part of the campaign, BAE Systems’ staff and crew from HMS Defender will pledge to set themselves various challenges for a fitter and healthier lifestyle in support of this year’s ‘Sport Your Trainers’.
Defender, recognised as the most advanced anti-air warfare vessel in the world, is currently being prepared to undertake her second stage sea trials in the coming weeks, ahead of her hand over to the UK Royal Navy in the latter half of the year.
Senior Naval Officer of HMS Defender, Commander Nicholas Boyd RN said:
"HMS Defender is honoured to support Glasgow 2014’s Sport Your Trainers Campaign. My ship is a proud product of Clyde Shipbuilding. As she nears the end of her construction we look forward to joining the Fleet, defending the UK’s interests worldwide and of course deepening our already strong links with our affiliated city of Glasgow."
Angus Holt, Enterprise Director at BAE Systems, said:
"With two shipyards on the Clyde, we are proud to pledge our support to Glasgow 2014's Sport your Trainers campaign. The Games will be a fantastic occasion for Glasgow and with HMS Defender’s affiliation to the city in which she was built, we hope today is the beginning of an exciting journey as everyone gets behind the campaign."
Glasgow 2014’s Chief Executive David Grevemberg said:
"It's fantastic to see HMS Defender and BAE Systems stepping up to show its support for Sport Your Trainers, we want the whole of Scotland to Step Up to the challenge with this year's campaign and it's inspiring to see a ship so closely tied to the city of Glasgow getting right behind Sport Your Trainers."
Glasgow 2014 is asking people across Scotland to Step Up and set themselves a challenge for a fitter and healthier lifestyle and to celebrate their achievements by wearing their trainers on Commonwealth Day, which falls on Monday 12th March.
The Games will be the biggest event ever to come to Scotland, and through 'Sport Your Trainers', it's a great opportunity for everyone across the country to get involved with the Games and also a wonderful opportunity to achieve a fitter and healthier lifestyle.
