A total of 87 student-athletes represented the United States of America at these Games in Torino, Italy. The United States competed in the sports of curling, figure skating, mens ice hockey, alpine skiing, short track speedskating and long track speedskating. BR>BR>Winning a total of five medals (one gold, one silver and three bronze), the 2007 U.S. Winter World University Games Team produced the best Winter Universiade medal output for the United States since the 1997 Winter World University Games, which were held in Muju/Chonju, Korea. BR>BR>No stranger to winning a medal in Torino; John Shuster (Chisholm, Minn./Duluth, Minn./University of Minnesota-Duluth) led his teammates Jeff Isaacson (Gilbert, Minn./Bemidji State University), Shane McKinlay (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing Community College), Chris Plys (Duluth, Minn./Lake Superior College) and Kevin Johnson (Mapleton, Minn./Duluth, Minn./University of Minnesota-Duluth) to the gold medal in the mens curling competition in Pinerolo, Italy. Only 11 months prior Shuster found himself in the same Pinerolo arena on the bronze medal winning team at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games. BR>BR>The mens alpine ski team was responsible for the other four medals won by Team USA. Of these four medals, Adam Cole (Park City, Utah/Denver, Colo./University of Denver) won three of them, all bronze. Cole won bronze medals in the Mens Giant Slalom, Super-G and the Combined. Tague Thorson (Mahtomedi, Minn./Park City, Utah/University of Utah) won the silver medal in the Combined. For the Winter World University Games alpine skiing competition, the Combined is the combined time of all alpine races; it is not a separate event. BR>BR>The United States finished tied with Kazakhstan for 13th in the overall medal count and tied with Slovenia for 15th in the gold medal count.
