Another anime has arrived to be crowned as the favorite of the season: Spy x Family. From the mangaka Tatsuya Endō, the story began to be published in 2019 and, since then, it has been considered one of the greatest hits of the Shonen Jump+ app and website (where it was serialized for free). What is the secret of this enormous popularity? A mixture of very peculiar characters who unexpectedly coincide in starting a family, albeit because of personal interests.
“Everyone has a part of themselves that they cannot show to others. In an era when nations around the world are engaged in a fierce information war behind closed doors, Ostania and Westalis have been in the cold war for decades. The Westalis Intelligence Division (WISE) sends its best spy, 'Twilight', on a top-secret mission to monitor the movements of Donovan Desmond, who leads the Ostania National Unity Party, responsible for bombing peace efforts between the two countries,” says the official synopsis shared by Crunchyroll.
Initially, we are introduced to Twilight in his role as a spy originally from Westalis. He receives a new mission in which he must infiltrate the rival country to gather information about a new target and, to do so, he must pretend to be a father. This is how he takes the false pseudonym of Loid Forger to adopt a little orphan named Anya and marries Yor Briar, a beautiful but very reserved young woman.
However, he knows very little about the members of his “ordinary” household. Yor is a lethal assassin who has become known as the “Thorn Princess”, so she uses her tender role as a mother to have a cut and avoid being discovered in her true activities. On the other hand, Anya has the gift of reading the minds of the people around her, so she is fully aware of Loid's plan and will help him fulfill it in order to finally have what he wants most... a common and functional family.
It is set in the era of the Cold War in Europe
Spy x Family is set in a fictional European country known as the Republic of Ostania, which has a very similar aesthetic to Berlin at the brink of the Cold War. The context in which it is found is not clearly defined, but it is believed that they live between the 60s and 70s due to the details of the time such as the cars, the costumes and the behaviors of the characters.
Despite the fact that Loid, Yor and Anya only cross their paths out of mere interest, with the passage of the episodes they establish very close ties due to their own family dynamics. Comedy and action will not be missing in the adventures of this peculiar family that already has an anime adaptation through a collaboration between WIT Studios and CloverWorks. Each of the studios will animate half of the season, which will consist of 25 episodes in total.
