Denise Dresser accused AMLO of misrepresenting the Mandate Revocation: “Demand that the people kneel before it”

The journalist condemned that the Morenista administration violated the electoral laws to promote the exercise

Denise Dresser accused President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) of turning the Mandate Revocation exercise into a “seal of submission”.

Through her opinion column in The Washington Post, the journalist shook the Government of the Federal Executive into “using good exercise for bad purposes.”

This, he stated in his text, later López Obrador allegedly made the consultation, initially designed to overturn bad rulers, into an instrument to “prop up the legitimate ones”: “He has manipulated a laudable initiative into a terrible exercise,” he accused.

It should be remembered that (in essence) the Revocation of Mandate is a tool that gives the people the ability to decide whether the president - in this case, Andrés Manuel - continues his administration or not.

However, in addition to the intentionality with which the Morenista administration had orchestrated the exercise, Dresser disapproved that it resorted to violations of the Law for its promotion. An act that, he pointed out, also returns to the consultation in a “pharsic montage” that will weaken democracy; a total setback to the spirit on which it was established.

“It is true that our democracy is dysfunctional and requires interventions and improvements, but not in this style,” the columnist clarified, followed by some mentions of cases where cabinet members and those close to the Fourth Transformation (Q4) have attacked electoral laws.

The most recent of these were allegations of alleged misuse of public resources against the Secretary of the Interior, Adán Augusto López, who was criticized for having taken a plane from the National Guard (NG) to the states where he promoted the Revocation in the middle of the electoral ban.

However, he also referred to the spectacular ones in favor of López Obrador placed on public roads in various parts of the Republic.

Under this argument, Dresser pointed out that AMLO's real intention to organize the exercise is, by far, far from giving the people the power to remove their president:

“Demonstrate approval for yourself, so that there is no talk of the disapproval of your government; hit the National Electoral Institute (INE) (...) and present to the opposition as a minority group, elitist and opposed to the participation of the 'good' Mexicans,” he said.

On April 10, the Mandate Revocation exercise was finally carried out to determine the continuity or suspension of the administration of the president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO).

It should be noted that for the consultation to be valid, it is necessary, among other requirements, a participation of at least 40% of the current electoral roll. That is, of the nearly 93 million Mexicans registered in the INE, it will be necessary for about 37 million to vote.

Of that amount, for López Obrador to be revoked from office in the Executive Branch, an absolute majority will be required whoever requests it, that is, at least 19 million votes.
