The Unitary Union of Workers in Education of Peru (Sutep) announced that it will hold a march on Thursday, 7 April, in search of the President of the Republic, Pedro Castillo, make changes to curb the social crisis facing the country.

According to its secretary general, Lucio Castro, the teachers are dissatisfied with the government of Castillo Terrones in the face of the “improvisation, corruption and the rise in the cost of living” that is being witnessed.

Faced with this scenario, Castro urged the president to leave office and immediately call for new general elections, both presidential and congressional. “Faced with this situation, tell Mr. Castillo to change or simply resign. Tomorrow we are going to parade through the streets of Lima expressing our solidarity with the deceased and unease over this government that does not live up to expectations,” he told Exitosa.

He also indicated that Castillo has broken his word by not fulfilling the promises announced during the campaign, including the change of the Constitution and the proper implementation of a Second Agrarian Reform.

“This government is characterized by improvisation and not addressing problems seriously. Electoral commitments have been forgotten,” he told the media outlet.

According to Lucio Castro, during electoral times, the head of State received the support of the public as he considered him an option for change, while Sutep supported him by believing that, because he was a teacher of rural areas, would meet the demands of the Education sector.

“We support Castillo to become president and because of the commitments that were made during the campaign, but the time that has passed has proved that the hope we placed in him has been wrong,” he said.

Finally, the Secretary General called on the population and workers in general to march this Thursday with the Unitary Union of Workers in Education of Peru to express jointly the discomfort over the management of Pedro Castillo.

“We appeal to the population and workers in general because the objective of this mobilization is to express the discomfort we feel at the rising cost of living and the absence of a plan to solve these issues,” he said.

SUTEP STATEMENT

Last night, Sutep published a lengthy statement on its social networks calling on “social organizations to mobilize in defense of the popular economy and make the cost of the crisis paid by the rich”. “Sutep will take to the streets this April 7 as part of CITE and our headquarters, the CGTP,” the union said in its statement.

Among its demands is also the lack of judgment by the Executive to establish a curfew in Metropolitan Lima and Callao on 5 April, which caused a series of dismantles in the center of the city.

“We call on President Pedro Castillo to end improvisation, non-compliance with commitments and put a stop to inflation,” the letter continues. “The Government's decision to declare total irremovability in Lima and Callao and then lift it to popular pressure demonstrates its inability to find lasting solutions, affecting the population's right to work,” he said.

“We demand the appointment of suitable ministers. We believe that a holder like Rosendo Serna must, first, respect the law, install collective bargaining, respect the rights of workers and organizations and resign if it is confirmed that he copied the doctoral thesis,” he added.
