María Camila Osorio will start defending the title of the WTA 250 in Bogotá this Monday

The Colombian tennis player will play, for the round of 16, against Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia at 4:00 p.m. local time

Colombian Camila Osorio will start on Monday as the favorite for the Copa Colsanitas title, the WTA 250 tournament in Bogotá that she won last year and in which she will have Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia as the main contender. The championship, which officially started this Saturday, will be played on the brick dust courts of the Bogotá Country Club and will give out a prize pool of $239,477.

Camila Osorio rose this Monday to her best position in the WTA Ranking during her short and fruitful sports career, the tennis player from Cucuteña rose one more square and is already ranked 33rd, just for the week in which she will seek to defend her only WTA title in the country's capital.

The Colombian starts as a favorite for the Colsanitas Cup title, the WTA 250 tournament in Bogotá that she won last year and in which she will have as the main contender Beatriz Haddad Maia, who will also be her partner in the doubles.

María Camila, the best women's racket in Latin America, will have to defend in the country precisely the 280 points achieved a year ago when she was crowned champion against Slovenian Tamara Zidansek. In her debut, she will be facing Switzerland's Ylena In-Albon on Tuesday; while this Monday, together with the Brazilian Haddad Maia, they will be facing the American Ingrid Neel and the French Elixane Lechemia.

This will be the return of the cucuteña to the circuit after her stop after retiring due to injury in the first round of the Indian Wells Masters 1.000. The last time a Colombian was the first seed of the championship was in 2005 when tennis player Fabiola Zuluaga was the best placed in the WTA ranking among the participants.

In addition to Osorio, who at 20 years old is ranked 33rd in the WTA ranking, and Haddad Maia, motivated after beating Greek Maria Sakkari, number three in the world ranking last month, the Colsanitas Cup will have six other players who are among the top 100 in the world.

They are Swedish Rebecca Peterson (76), Hungarian Panna Udvardy (82), Slovak Anna Karolina Schmiedlova (89), France's Harmony Tan (91) and Australia's Astra Sharma (96), who will seek to beat Latinas and be prophets in their own land.

Colombia will also be represented at the tournament by Maria Fernanda Herazo, Yuliana Lizarazo and Yuliana Monroy, who received wildcards. Other recognized tennis players who will participate in the Colsanitas Cup are Italy's Sara Errani, runner-up in Roland Garros in 2012; Switzerland's Stefanie Vögele, and Mexico's Renata Zarazúa.

Likewise, Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska, who was a finalist in the WTA 500 Dubai recently, will participate. The WTA 250 Tournament in Bogotá has been held since 1998 and the tennis player who has won it most times is Zuluaga, who was crowned champion in the 1999, 2002, 2003 and 2004 editions.
