(ATR) The Faroe Islands is bringing in London-based sports communications consultancy VERO to help turn the decades-old dream of International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognition into reality.

VERO will work with Ítróttasamband Føroya, the Faroese Confederation of Sports and Olympic Committee (FCSOC), to highlight the case that the Faroe Islands deserves to join the IOC fold, given its passion and commitment to sport as well as its self-governing political status.

"The Faroe Islands has been seeking recognition for over 40 years, is a founding member of the International Paralympic Committee and is already recognized in its own right by a further eight International Federations, so it has a strong case to build from," VERO Director John Zerafa said in a statement.

The Faroe Islands has been a self-governing region of the Kingdom of Denmark since 1948. It currently competes at the Olympic Games as part of the Danish National Olympic Committee but the country has won 13 medals while competing independently in the Paralympics.

"The Faroe Islands has competed in every Paralympic Summer Games since 1984 and we want to have the same opportunity to compete in the Olympic Games," Jon Hestoy, Vice President of the Faroese Confederation of Sports and Olympic Committee, said.

"The appointment of VERO reflects how seriously we take our Olympic ambition and we are looking forward to working with them and outlining our case to the IOC and wider Olympic family."

VERO has a proven track record working with a wide variety of international organizations including FIFA, UEFA, World Rugby, International Surfing Association, International Cycling Union and the World Olympians Association. It has also worked on winning Olympic bid campaigns such as Paris 2024, PyeongChang 2018, Buenos Aires YOG 2018 and Rio 2016.
