Suleyman Mikayilov welcomes IOC update on AIBA

Presidential candidate sets out timetable and process for urgent reforms

Suleyman Mikayilov, the candidate for the International Boxing Association (AIBA) Presidential election on 12 December 2020, has welcomed the statement of the IOC Executive Board regarding AIBA, which is in line with his manifesto commitment to a detailed delivery plan for deep reforms.

It said: "The IOC EB took note that the IOC recommendation to put the AIBA reforms and their implementation first has not been respected to date. For this reason, the IOC will consider the position of AIBA only after seeing that the reforms are being adopted and implemented." The link to the IOC update can be found here.

Giving his reaction to the news, Mr. Mikayilov said: "In recent conversations with National Federations and other stakeholders I have stressed that I have a practical plan and timeline and that the current reforms do not go far enough. I totally accept the IOC’s position of the need for radical reforms. But most importantly, I support their emphasis on the delivery of the promises and implementation of reforms: action, not just words!

"I want to confirm to all federations that, should I be elected President, I have a concrete plan and team in place to deliver on our promises. I have already set up a team of the highest international, professional standing and pledge to do the following:

1 Complete these reforms within the first 100 days.

2 Send note of the reforms to the Association of International Federations (ASOIF) for immediate assessment.

3 Organise an AIBA Extraordinary Congress to approve reforms and elect a new Executive Committee.

4 Send a report to the IOC Executive Committee before the Tokyo Olympic Games.

5 Wait for the IOC Evaluation after the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Mikayilov continued: "The National Federations of AIBA must now understand that the IOC wants concrete actions and a urgent delivery plan," said Mr Mikayilov. "I have the detailed plan, set out in my Manifesto, to help us achieve that. This includes an external, experienced international team."
