(ATR) Frank Fredericks won acclaim as a sprinter from Namibia at the 1992 and 1996 Olympics, winning four silver medals. In 2017 he is about to become the best known member of the IOC as chair of the evaluation commission for the 2024 Olympics.
The 14-member commission will visit bid cities Budapest, Los Angeles and Paris in April and May. Fredericks, 49, will be the face of the IOC during those visits, likely subject to extra attention as a result of the fame that precedes him. The media will produce stories about his exploits on the track and try hard to elicit comments about the pluses and minuses from Fredericks, who must be the IOC diplomat.
It’s the third time he’s served as a member of an evaluation commission, the first as chair.
Fredericks also has a hand in the preparations for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires as chair of the IOC Coordination Commisssion. Outside the IOC he is a member of the IAAF Council.
Fredericks served as a member of the IOC Athletes Commission from 2004 to 2012, chair from 2008. He was reelected to the IOC in 2012 and can serve till age 70, a span of time that’s likely to lead to other responsibilities for Fredericks on the IOC.
