AOC Releases Annual Report and Agenda for Annual General Meeting

The Australian Olympic Committee has released its Annual Report and Agenda for its Annual General Meeting (AGM) to be held in Sydney on Saturday May 4th 2019.

For the first time, the AGM will be addressed by the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach OLY.

Mr Bach will also be present for a review of the year by AOC President John Coates AC who will deliver his Address on the State of the Olympics in Australia and the threats to the independence of the AOC.

Mr Coates will also present Mr Bach with the President’s Trophy.

In 2018, AOC President John Coates AC initiated the President’s Trophy to recognise long-serving leaders of International Federations or other organisations within the Olympic Movement.

Mr Coates will also present an Order of Merit to Raelene Boyle AM, MBE. While this award was originally announced in 2018, Raelene Boyle was overseas and unable to accept the award in person.

An Order of Merit is awarded a person who in the opinion of the Executive has achieved remarkable merit in the sporting world, either through personal achievement or contribution to the development of sport.

In his review of the year in the Annual Report, Mr Coates noted that in 2018, Australian teams had achieved significant success in competition in the Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang and the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires.

He also pointed to the AOC’s success in expanding its community engagement profile with the successful roll-out of the Olympics Unleashed program into primary schools in Queensland and the decision by the NSW Government to adopt the program in NSW secondary schools.

Mr Coates also noted the implications of the IOC’s "New Norm" approach to make future Olympic Games more affordable on any potential South East Queensland bid for the 2032 Games.

He indicated that Queensland is in a good position to make a compelling case but much needed transport infrastructure would have to be in place.

"SE Queensland has no choice – with projected population growth in the region, there will be gridlock well before 2032."

The Annual Report pointed to a strong financial result for the AOC which was on target to achieve $62.5 million in sponsorship and licensing across the four-year period leading into Tokyo 2020.
