(ATR) The Olympic Village in Turin is now in the hands of the 2006 organizing committee after a handover ceremony Thursday at the colorful campus.

Built on the site of an ancient market, the village is a collection of 39 multi-story, multi-hued apartment blocks, 750 units in all, with room for 2600 residents.

After the Games, the complex will become permanent housing and dormitory space for university students.

A team of 11 architects worked on the project which follows the layout of a city within a city, a system of blocks, streets and piazzas, all designed with sustainability in mind. The design also includes portions of the old market.

Construction began two years ago. Thursday's handover is being celebrated as the last ribbon-cutting in Turin prior to the Games. Still to come in the mountains is the smaller Olympic Village at Sestriere, where construction continues.
