(ATR) The days are numbered forthe evocative Sugar Loaf logo usedby theRio De Janeiro bid for the 2016 Olympics. A fast-track search is underway for a new symbol to represent Rio as the host of the Games.
Rio 2016 spokesman St. Clair Milesi tells Around the Rings that if all goes according to plan, the new look for Rio 2016 will be unveiled to the world during the New Year’s Eve celebration at Copacabana, just over eight months from now.
That would be just over a year after Rio was awarded the Olympics half the time it took forLondon 2012 to release its new logo after winning the Olympics.
The call for tenders from design professionals is now open, the first deadline April 30, the date to file an initial application to Rio 2016.
A briefing in early May will be followed by formal applications due at the end of the month. Interviews with selected applicants take place in June with a select group invited to submit logo designs in early August, each receiving a fee of about $6,000 for their work.
The winning designer chosen from these finalists will receive a $28,000 prize. A jury of up to 15 members will review the designs.
Full details of the process are contained in the 50-page call for tenders at the Rio 2016 website, http://www.rio2016.org.br/pt/AquisicaoBens/servicos/ .
Only individuals or firms involved with the design industry in Brazil are invited to submit applications. No consortiums will be permitted.
Once a final design is selected, the IOC must still approve the new mark, which must also be registeredas a global trademark ahead of any public launch.
The original logo for Rio 2016 as an applicant city debuted in Dec. 2007.
"The Sugar Loaf in the shape of a heart represents the Brazilians' indisputable passion and vibration for sports. The exclamation point replacing the numeral 1 in the writing 'Rio 20!6' symbolizes Brazil's heightened expectations with the chance of hosting the event," said logo designer Ana Soter at the time.
Subsequent iterations added the words "candidate city" and the Olympic rings, as used today.
