(ATR) The inspiration for the Rio 2016 Paralympic torch came from the "curves of the city" of Rio de Janeiro, designerGustavo Chelles tells Around the Rings.

Rio organizers unveiled the torch on Dec. 11 with Mayor Eduardo Paes, Brazilian Paralympic Committee President Andrew Parsons and Rio 2016 President Carlos Nuzman present.

"We were intending to build a symbol that would communicate Brazil and the energy of the people," Chelles, torch designer, said to ATR.

"I think the Brazilian people will recognize themselves in the torch because the torches are colorful and organic; it invites you to touch the torch and feel the curves as well."

The design of the Paralympic torch is similar to its Olympic counterpart, and Chelles said that both were designed at the same time. The curves of the body of the torch outline the waves of Copacabana and the iconic mountains around the city.

"I think it is the right moment to present the torch and the symbolic iconic points of the city of Rio de Janeiro," Nuzman said to reporters.

"In my opinion is it’s a very important moment for the Paralympic movement in the world to show how this is important for the Games and for the city and for the organizers."

Due to the time constraints on the Paralympic Torch Relay, it will only be visiting six cities in Brazil. All five regions of the country will be covered when the torch visits Belem, Brasilia, Joinville, Natal, Rio de Janeiro, and Sao Paulo.

"I think the relay is extensive enough, and can unite the whole country behind Paralympic athletes," Parsons said to ATR.

"I think the torch is beautiful. Of course you can see it is part of the same family of the Olympic torch, but different, like the Paralympics."
