Paris, April 15, 2011: The International Canoe Federation’s twenty seven voting Board Members today met in Paris to vote for the Host Cities of 13 ICF Championship events from 2013 – 2015. After declaring the bidding process to have been a success back in February, the ICF invited candidates who had submitted their bid documents before the deadline, to present their bids in front of the Board of Directors.
In the hotly contested bid to host the 2013 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships, which was initially allocated to Szeged Hungary, then vacated because of their decision to host the Sprint Championships in 2011, Rio de Janeiro stepped in with a bid. After delivering a convincing presentation, with commitments from local and federal government, it became evident that the Brazilians are ready and willing to host one of ICF’s most spectacular events.
With Germany, Portugal, Italy and Czech Republic in a battle to host an ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships, this was the first time in the ICF Bidding Process that four National Federations from different corners of Europe had stated their intent to bid for one of ICF’s most prized events. Eventually it was Milan that won the privilege to host canoe’s prestigious event. Former Olympic Champion Antonio Rossi (ITA) said he was especially pleased because the venue in Milan is where he first started training.
Rossi continued, "I think it is a big chance for us to improve upon the sporting culture and also the canoeing movement in Milan. The fact that the EXPO is happening the same year as the World Championship, and that the theme of the 2015 EXPO is water makes it even more symbolic, and these are events where the many children of Milan can enjoy!"
With the high quality bids received from the Candidature Cities of Bourg-Saint Maurice and London, it was hard to imagine that they could surpass the Board’s expectations; both delivered spirited and colourful presentations. Indeed it was a bitter sweet moment when ICF President announced that London would host the 2015 Canoe Slalom World Championships. This decision was celebrated with a healthy round of applause by the London Bidding Committee who in their presentation had made it very clear what a successful bid meant to them; the strengthening of the London 2012 legacy. ICF 2nd Vice President Richard Fox said, "Selection had to be based on the quality of the venue, the potential of the organizing committee and the interest of the sport. It was certainly very difficult to choose but a choice had to be made."
When asked what message he would be carrying to London, Paul Owen, Chief Executive of the British Canoe Union (BCU) said, "Certainly I am delighted we won, it is a fantastic success for the city of London. We are a bit sad for our French friends who delivered an equally strong bid, but now I look forward to delivering on the promise I made to the ICF, which was to deliver a very high quality competition"
The ICF’s awarding of the 2015 Canoe Slalom World Championship event to London makes it the first Federation to commit a high level event, a World Championship, to the city after the London 2012 Games.
Following up with Fabien LeFevre (FRA) who had earlier spoken at the presentation in support of the bid, the ICF asked him what was next for Bourg Saint Mourice and he said that the venue would continue being a great attraction for canoeists from all over the World, he said, "It is a good place to prepare for the Olympic Games; it has natural water, 1000km high water, great landscape and many outdoor sport possibilities." He added, "I am a bit disappointed that the decision did not go our way because it would have been the best choice. "
