If Denmark were to decide then the 2014 World Half Marathon Championships would take place in Copenhagen. Denmark has submitted its bid for the championships, where no less than the entire world is invited to participate in the event in wonderful Copenhagen.

Denmark’s abilities to host major international sports events are widely acknowledged. The 2014 World Half Marathon Championships in Copenhagen would complement the broad range foof events that have already been staged in Denmark or are going to be staged in the near future.

Denmark has one of the highest mass race participation rates of the world. This is a result of the Danish focus on increased mass participation through a system that links the activities of schools, clubs and mass participation events directly to the national federations.

The Danish bid is based upon the Case of Copenhagen, which is built on a combination of three factors: The right place, the right programmes and the right event.

"The 2014 World Half Marathon Championships are well suited for Denmark. Here we can benefit from the many experiences from other major international sports events in order to set a creative frame for the championships, ensure added value and create involvement in the championships both up to, under and after the event," says Lars Lundov, CEO, Sport Event Denmark. The organisation is the national sports events organisation that collaborates with the Danish Athletic Federation and Wonderful Copenhagen.

"With the Case of Copenhagen we will present our bid for the world on the future of sports: The entire world will be able to participate in the streets of Copenhagen. The event will address both the elite runner and the run for fun-runner. The event will embrace the first step of the training and continue right through to the finish line in Copenhagen," says Jakob Larsen, CEO, Danish Athletic Federation.

"Previously we have hosted events like archery and triathlon with great success by thinking creatively and using the city as an arena. The 2014 World Half Marathon Championships will underline what Copenhagen stands for and with our bid we present the beautiful, car free course as Flat, Fast and Scenic, which will no doubt set focus on the Running City Copenhagen," says Lars Vallentin Christensen, Business Development Manager, Wonderful Copenhagen.

Also from the athletes’ point of view a World Half Marathon in Denmark is being welcomed. Wilson Kipketer, IAAF Ambassador and former 800 m World Record Holder says: "I support the Danish bid to host the World Half Marathon 2014 and would be very pleased to welcome the IAAF family to Copenhagen."

Denmark is up against New York (USA), Cardiff (England) and Cheboksary (Russia) and the IAAF Council will appoint the host of the 2014 World Half Marathon Championships on the 10-11 November in Monaco.
