Initiatives to Mark One Year To Go to Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games

Tokyo, 21 August 2020 – The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Tokyo 2020) today

announced a series of initiatives that will take place between 24 August and 5 September 2020, exactly one year

prior to the period of next year’s Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

The following initiatives are planned:

⚫ Tokyo 2020: Tokyo 2020 Digital Contents

1 September 2020 – Interview with Markus Rehm, long jump (Athletics), triple gold medallist in London 2012

and Rio 2016

3 September 2020– Interview with KIMURA Keiichi, Japanese swimmer and winner of four medals at the Rio 2016

Games.

Note: other athlete interviews will be uploaded to the Tokyo 2020 website.

⚫ Tokyo 2020: Laser mapping and special lighting projection at TOKYO SKYTREE

With the cooperation of TOBU TOWER SKYTREE CO., LTD., laser mapping and special illuminations will be projected

onto the landmark TOKYO SKYTREE during the final week of August.

Notes:

- No laser mapping or lighting will be projected on days when other events are being hosted at TOKYO SKYTREE.

- After 1 September, regular lighting and the number of days to go until the commencement of the Paralympic

Games will be projected by laser mapping.

⚫ Paralympic movie ‘Rising Phoenix’ to be broadcasted on Netflix

On Wednesday 26 August ‘Rising Phoenix’, a ground-breaking movie about the Paralympic Movement, will premiere

in over 190 countries worldwide on Netflix. Featuring Paralympians from across the world, Rising Phoenix tells the

extraordinary story of the Paralympic Games. From the rubble of World War II to the third biggest sporting event on

the planet, along the way sparking a global movement which continues to change the way the world thinks about

disability, diversity and human potential.

Release date: Wednesday 26 August 2020

Running time: 1 hour 45 minutes

⚫ International Paralympic Committee: #WaitForTheGreats Paralympic 1-YEAR-TO-GO Campaign

During 24 August 2020 – 5 September 2020, a series of original and unique videos will showcase the strength of

Paralympians and the true power of the Paralympics. All videos will offer subtitles in English, French, Spanish,

Japanese, Chinese, and Portuguese.

Timeline:

24 Aug: One Year to Go until the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games

 A powerful short video will be launched simultaneously by the IPC, IPC partners,

broadcasters, and athlete/influencer channels.

 Broadcasters will be encouraged to use #WaitForTheGreats watermark across all

programming; IPC partners and athletes will use this on social media, with an emoji

hashtag on Twitter.

25 – 26 Aug: A 24-hour Instagram Live relay featuring athletes and key people in the Paralympic Movement

28 Aug: First-ever Paralympic podcast will be launched

24 Aug – 5 Sep: Athlete content from all 22 Tokyo 2020 Paralympic sports and from a number of nations will be

shared and cross-posted via Instagram and Facebook with the hashtag #WaitForTheGreats

5 Sep: The Closing Act –a live performance to celebrate the end of the campaign
