(ATR) A bigger and better version of Pan Am Expo, the first major sports trade show for Brazil is open through Friday in Rio de Janeiro.IOC President Jacques Rogge opened the gathering this morning before heading to Brasilia to meet with the President of Brazil.

Dozens of companies and sports organizations from Brazil and South America have set up exhibits in the tented convention center erected next to the Gloria Marina in Rio's northern beaches. The marina will also play host to rowing events for the 2007 Pan American Games.

The Pan Ams are the driving force behind the Expo, which had a modest debut two years ago, launched soon after Rio won the 2007 games. The Brazil Olympic Committee and its commercial partner, events company Fagga, want to establish the Expo as a top sports business meeting in the Americas.

This second edition has drawn more than 1,000 delegates, most of them from Brazilian sport and business, but a healthy contingent has also come from National Olympic Committees throughout the Americas.

There?s Jamaican National Olympic Committee President Michael Fennell and Canadian Olympic Committee President Mike Chambers along with COC chief operating officer Lou Ragagnin. Spotted from the U.S. Olympic Committee were marketing executive Linda Kilis, Games preparation chief Doug Ingram and Bob Condron from media relations.

Playing a major role in the seminars held throughout the Expo is Craig McLatchey of Event Knowledge Services, the company in Lausanne that assists events such as the 2007 Pan America Games with planning advice. Also here is Australian marketing expert Mike Bushell, Patrick Adiba from Atos Origin and Beijing 2008 marketing chief Yuan Bin.

Exhibitors include worldwide Olympic sponsors Atos Origin and GE, as well as other international firms such as Accor, Alcatel, Gerflor Siemens, and Ticketmaster.
