Folk singer Martina Portocarrero died at the age of 72 on Friday, April 22, in Switzerland, according to family members close to La República. The interpreter of “Flor de Retama” was fighting lung cancer, which was being treated in a hospital in the country of Central Europe. However, his state of health became complicated and he did not manage to get out alive.
In one of her last press interviews, the national artist spoke about her illness: “It's complicated. I'm delicate, they've been investigating, giving the origin. I am a person who eats well, does not drink, does not smoke, does not drink icy things, I never got sick, it is quite surprising that I catch a rather invasive cancer”.
Despite this, Portocarrero was always positive. “I am in a state that is not easy, but it is not impossible either, but it all depends on one's attitude and I have never wished anyone or my enemies ill. If I get sick with this, it's learning something and reacting positively and I'm surrounded by affection. Let's see how much I can stand,” he said for El Popular in February of this year, two months before his death.
THEY ASK FOR A TRIBUTE IN LIFE
Sayuri Yanagui, one of its representatives, lamented the death of Martina Portocarrero and said that she wanted to pay homage to her in life, because that was the desire of the ayacucho singer; however, this recognition was not achieved.
That is why he asked the Peruvian State to pay a posthumous tribute to the singer of songs such as “Mamacha de las Mercedes”, “From song to canto”, “El canto de las Palomas”, among others.
FUNDRAISING
The representative also announced that Portocarrero's relatives wanted to repatriate the artist's body. “We come to your solidarity to bring the body from Switzerland of our dear Martin to her beloved Peru,” reads the statement authorized by Martha, daughter of Portocarrero.
