The Mayor's Office of Medellín recently announced that residents and former inhabitants of the street have joined together to form a committee that seeks to contribute to the cleaning and beautification of the city.

The Ornamental and Grooming Committee, which was created with the support of the Mayor's Office of Medellín, aims to carry out cleaning, garden maintenance, light waste management and activities in favor of the environment in areas of the city that they previously occupied.

This committee is made up of 30 citizens, 15 beneficiaries of the Day 2 Center component of the Street Inhabitant System and 15 who are in semi-open resocialization, who are currently building a new life project.

According to the municipal administration, ornamentation and cleaning actions are carried out twice a week in areas with the presence of street inhabitants, in order to motivate them to access the mayor's offer and for the beneficiaries of the resocialization process to take care of these places they once lived.

A project that is integrated with the appropriation days of the center of Medellín

This group of people who will work to keep the city clean, is articulated with other institutional units such as the Centre Management, which with the 'Centro Consentido' conference integrates citizens so that they protect, respect and value every corner of the city and specifically that sector.

During 2021, the committee participated in more than 80 ornamental and cleaning brigades attended by some residents and former street dwellers with disabilities or health problems, with the aim of transforming the places that welcomed them when they were on the street.

“With these days we are contributing to the recovery of nature and cleaning up the places that are overrun with rubbish and that one day we occupy. These spaces allow us to distract ourselves, learn about the separation of waste and also forget about consumption,” said Jonatan Muñoz, a citizen belonging to the Ornamental and Cleaning Committee.

The municipal administration assured that citizens receive comprehensive care that includes self-care, food, psychosocial accompaniment, nursing, educational and sports recreational activities, and re-socialization processes with academic and occupational training. “The purpose is to empower them and offer them opportunities that improve their living conditions,” said the mayor's office.
