The images of the marriage of Belén Barnechea, daughter of former presidential candidate Alfredo Barnechea, with Martín Cabello de los Cobos have caused a stir because of their alleged “viceregal” theme. The use of indigenous women on the ground, as a sign of reverence, has opened the debate on racism and classism which, unfortunately, continues to be latent in our country.
The wedding was held in Trujillo, Bethlehem's hometown, on Saturday, April 9. The event was attended by personalities of the Spanish aristocracy and prominent politicians from the European country, due to the bridegroom's ties with royalty, being the grandson of the counts of Fuenteblanca in Spain. Alfredo Barnechea, who arrived by motorcycle taxi, and the other members of his family were also present.
In the midst of the celebration, Barnechea Ganoza shared photos and videos of her wedding on social media, not imagining that she would be the target of criticism almost instantly. Netizens called the theme “retrograde”, “racist” and “macho”, one of its main detractors being Susana Baca, a prominent national singer, three times winner of the Latin Grammy Awards and former Minister of Culture.
“As an Afro-descendant woman, I reject this unwise 'candorosa' farce at a Trujillo wedding that relates an infamous historical fact of humanity that is slavery and the vexatious colony for many Peruvians, with a celebration supposedly of love. It's like remembering the Holocaust for a birthday party,” he said at first.
“When I was Minister of Culture, we warned against the trivialization of history by some social sectors and created the Observatory against Racism, I am sorry that they did not react with the rigor of the case... I am more sorry that a politician who claimed to defend the history of our homeland, granted and has kept a disgraceful silence on this fact... one more of our current state of political decline, those at the top humiliating those at the bottom,” he concluded in his message.
MINISTRY OF CULTURE PRONOUNCES
Without explicitly mentioning the wedding of Belén Barnechea, Alerta Racismo referred to the staging and characterization of pre-Columbian culture, slavery and cultural elements originating in Trujillo. The Mincul platform specified that “it reproaches the inappropriate use of cultural diversity for commercial and/or leisure reasons, since it affects perceiving it as something exotic”.
They also indicated that this type of celebration “reinforces historical stereotypes that do not add to the respectful treatment that Peru's ancient culture deserves.”
“We call on citizens to value and promote respect for our history and cultural diversity, expressed through the country's identity, languages and cultures. Let's work together to eliminate ethnic-racial discrimination,” said Alerta Racismo.
MAGALY MEDINA DEFENDS QUESTIONED MARRIAGE
Far from being indignant, the 'Magpie' came out in defense of the controversial theme that was used at Belén Barnechea's wedding to Martín Cabello de los Cobos. According to the host, the use of indigenous women and other elements did not seek to offend anyone, but to show the culture of Trujillo.
“She's very simple, very simple. It seems that he loves Trujillo very much, the land of his maternal ancestors. The pictures he presented along the way, with a sailor, with a band and fireworks... Of course, people on social networks decontextualized these pictures that they presented to their foreign guests. They wanted to show the culture of the north of the country,” said the host.
In turn, he stressed that this type of theme is quite common in other countries. “They have looked down on it and it's not like that. In other countries it is quite natural. In Cartagena, the bride and groom walk the streets with the brunettes who dance and play the drums. It's part of the culture. Well, it was a nice wedding that rocked all of Trujillo,” said Magaly Medina.
