What happened? Ethel Well, Brunella Horna and Janet Barboza started America Today by celebrating the Peru triumph over Paraguay for the last date of the South American qualifier. However, no one expected that the hosts would not know the lyrics of “Contigo Peru”, an emblematic theme that has marked the history of Peruvian football.
In this Wednesday, March 30, the TV presenters were surprised by the production of the program with the song performed by Arturo 'Zambo' Cavero and Óscar Áviles, the same one that was sung in unison by Peruvian fans when Argentine referee Fernando Rapallini sounded the final whistle at the Estadio Nacional.
Although at first Gisela Valcárcel's daughter managed to sing the first stanza of the song, it became clear that she didn't know the rest of the lyrics. The same happened with the 'Rulitos' and Brunella, who moved their lips to cope with the embarrassing moment, since the cameras did not stop striking them.
Christian Dominguez and Edson Davila tried to help his teammates, but unfortunately they were not clear on the lyrics either. Luckily, Oscar del Portal, a sports commentator, sang the song louder than usual so that the presenters could guide themselves and continue with the celebration.
But the thing did not stop there, as the production re-launched the historic theme that identifies the Peruvian national team to put drivers in trouble. For the second time, Ethel, Janet and Brunella tried to cope with the situation by dancing and singing aloud only the part: “I will give you life and when I die (...) With you Peru”.
THE FACT: “Contigo Peru” was created by Augusto Polo Campos and was held for the qualifiers for the Argentina 78 World Cup, with the precedent of the success of “Y is called Peru”. The acceptance of the fans caused it to be considered as an anthem for those who love their roots.
EMOTIONAL SINGING AT THE NATIONAL STADIUM
After winning the victory in Peru vs. Paraguay, Ricardo Gareca's national team paraded all over the National Stadium to thank the loyal fans who keep encouraging them for their support. Although the match was over, the song played by 'Zambo' Cavero and Óscar Avilés sounded. More than one was moved when the players sang this theme.
It was Gianluca Lapadula, player who scored the first goal in favor of Peru, who sang the song as tears fell down his face. This moment will remain for the memory and history of Peruvian football, since for a long time there has been no single connection between fans and players.
PERU IS IN THE REPECHAGE
It was achieved! The team took fifth place in the standings of the South American Qualifiers. This place gives her the option to play the playoff against the winner of the Asian Qualifiers for a spot in Qatar 2022. The rival will come out of the one who is victorious between the United Arab Emirates and Australia.
Although the date has not yet been defined, it will most likely be done on June 13 or 14. It will be played in the host country of the next world cup (Doha) and the winner will be defined in a single match. This match will be played after the UAE vs Australia, which is scheduled to be played a week before (June 7) to be played in Doha.
