Unlike several members of the Congress of the Republic, the leader of the party Alliance for Progress, César Acuña Peralta, was in favor of the presence of observers from the Organization of American States (OAS) during the process of presidential vacancy that the president will have to face Pedro Castillo on Monday, March 28. Through his Twitter account he shared his openness to having representatives of the international entity.

We welcome the presence of the OAS as an observer of the presidential vacancy process. This means that there is no “coup” but a constitutional attribute of our Congress. We are confident that this observation will be objective and impartial without interference in our internal affairs,” said the former presidential candidate.

According to a document sent by Foreign Minister César Landa to the President of the Congress, María del Carmen Alva, the Secretary for Legal Affairs, Jean Michel Arrighi, the Secretary for Access to Rights and Equity, Maricarmen Plata, and the OAS Representative to Peru, Miguel Ángel Trinidad, would be the members of the entity who would attend the the president's discharges, the debate between congressmen and the vote on will decide the political future of Pedro Castillo.

Regarding the actions of the Alliance for Progress in the face of the new vacancy request, its leader César Acuña said it was “impossible”. “There are no votes,” he said, adding that he would not grant the votes of his bank either in the hope that “this government will do better management every day, surround itself with better people, with better profiles.” However, the statements he made to Canal N were contrary to the position of his bench that voted in favor of admitting the vacancy motion against the Head of State.

Acuña said that it will be difficult to reach the 87 votes that will allow Castillo to be dismissed. “You should not play with the expectations of the people and act seriously,” were words that Acuña also said from her social networks.

PARDON THE COUNTRY

In the Congress that voted in favor of the vacancy of former President Martín Vizcarra, there was also representation of the Alliance for Progress. The group was one of the benches that with its vote led to the former president having to leave the Government Palace. However, after the crisis generated by the controversial decision, César Acuña apologized to the country on behalf of his party.

After the crisis, I apologize, from the depths of my heart to the country on behalf of my party, and I express my renewed congratulations to the young people who have given everything to make it clear that there is an urgent need for political openness of the powers of the State to society,” he wrote on his Twitter account.

“My position from the beginning was against vacancy [...] Despite this, the vast majority of the PPP bench decided to vote based on each one's conscience. Our party is a democratic organization and it is worth remembering that the congressmen of the Republic are not subject to mandatory mandates,” he said at the end of November 2020.

The leader of the Alliance for Progress has not referred to the reflection described above; however, he has been in favor of the process that the head of state is facing today, although acquiring the necessary votes is a difficult task for those seeking the removal of Castillo. The president must attend Monday, March 28 at 3:00 p.m. to respond to questions raised by Congress.
