“I'm going to convince you”: Ricardo Monreal will dialogue with opponents to approve AMLO's Electricity Reform

This initiative by President López Obrador is the most important of his six-year term, as it disrupts one of the most important sectors of any State

Ricardo Monreal, coordinator of the Morena National Regeneration Movement (Morena) bench in the Senate of the Republic, announced that he will establish an ongoing dialogue with the leaders of opposition benches to promote and approve the Electric Reform of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO).

This Thursday, March 24, the president of the Political Coordination Board (Jucopo) said that first, the initiative must pass the opinion in committees of the Chamber of Deputies, then be approved by the plenary of the Chamber of Deputies, and then the House of Senators will enter the review process.

In this regard, he noted that both in commissions and in the presentation of the plenary, the presidential initiative may undergo modifications, since different sectors see areas of opportunity in the final drafting promoted by the federal executive. He also hoped that in the review of the Upper House, corrections could be made to the final drawing.

It was during this jackal that the doctor of constitutional law said that the presidential proposal is subject to change both in Saint Lazarus and in the Senate, but that, by virtue of respecting the efforts of each house, he will not meddle in the work of the federal deputies.

In this regard, he said that it is not possible to anticipate scenarios that do not yet exist, but he pointed out that after speaking with Ignacio Mier, Morena's coordinator in the Chamber of Deputies, he obtained an approximate date on which this initiative will be ready to be turned to the Senate.

Regarding the aversion generated by the Electric Reform in the opposition benches, it was Monreal himself who said that the modifications he hopes will be reflected in the final text will serve as a tool to establish dialogue with them.

“I am looking for them individually and I hope to convince some of them,” he insisted, but maintained that for that dialogue to flow and result in the approval of the initiative, there must be modifications to the president's level.

He also said that it is part of his work in the Senate to seek out opponents, entrepreneurs and experts in the energy and electricity sector in order to nurture reform, in order to generate an initiative that is well received by Mexican society.

Regarding the particular rejection of Julen Rementería, leader of the National Action Party (PAN) in the Senate, he said that he and his opinion are respected; however, he will exhaust the path of dialogue as far as he can.

I hope that we will succeed in the negotiation and that it will be able to convince some parliamentary groups to accompany the Electricity Reform as long as it undergoes changes in the Chamber of Deputies and here we can search or make them in the Senate.” Finally, regarding the times of approval, ratification and promulgation of the Electricity Reform, Monreal believes that it remains in this period, but in an extraordinary way.
