There are many reasons why more and more vehicles are being purchased in the country, but motorcycles are preferred by Colombians, Juan Álvarez is one of the people who, as he says, “sucked” from using public transport and decided to buy a motorcycle.

An alliance between the National Association of Industrialists (ANDI) and the National Federation of Merchants (Fenalco), published a report with figures provided by the Single National Traffic Registry (RUNT), which indicates that in Colombia there are almost 10 million motorcycles, representing 60% of license plates sold in the country. In fact, DANE had already stated that 1 in 7 Colombians has a motorcycle.

Until February 2022, 134,440 new motorcycles were registered, representing an increase of 34.5% compared to the same month in 2021 and 31.4% compared to 2020, the years of the pandemic.

The registry also segments sales by department, Cundinamarca was the department that led the ranking with a total of 14,654 motorcycles, followed by Antioquia with 12,857, third place, Valle del Cauca with 6,977 and Atlántico with 2,247. The cities with the highest number of new motorcycle registrations in the same period were: Sabaneta with a share of 7.9%, Funza obtained 7.6% and Soacha 5%.

The most registered brands were Bajaj, Yamaha and AKT, which account for almost 50% of registered motorcycles. The report also analyzed these vehicles by type of displacement; the result shows that the largest market share during the month of February was the segment with a displacement between 111 cubic centimeters and 135, which represents 35.7%. But, the displacement that grew the most percentage points was 180cc, with 211.4% higher than 2021.

It should be noted that the most striking of the figures provided by RUNT has to do with the accelerated growth of the electric motorcycle sector, because it is evident that between January and February of this year 492 units have been sold. If we compare the figures for the second month, there is a growth of 36.9% compared to 2020.

These figures have motorcycles on the list of the legislative agenda, as tax increases, the imposition of toll charges, among other regulations in certain cities are being assessed. For example, in Bogotá, the possibility of including them in the size of the pick and plate is being analyzed, since these vehicles enjoy the exemption from this rule and this is presumably one reason why motorcycle sales are skyrocketing in the country's capital.
