Trujillo wore a handkerchief and celebrated his sailors. Two years later, Trujillo's Gran Chimu Colosseum, popularly known as “La Casa de la Marinera”, opened the doors of the 62nd National and 12th World Sailing Competition organized by the Libertad Club. More than 1,000 couples, distributed in 11 different categories, gathered at the venue to show off their dancing skills and feathered decorations for this Peruvian dance.
After a week of intense dances captured by the participants to the rhythms of bass drums, drums, trumpets, trombones and clarinets, the competition presented dancers Mauricio Wong and Dayanna Ñahuis in the adult category. In this edition of the competition, both were selected as national champions and world champions.Khider Baldwin and the couple Tatiana Ramírez took second place. Diego Caballero and Susana Sanchez took third place.
Mauricio Wong is currently a four-time sailor champion, and has more than 25 years of artistic experience in this dance. He has won the children's, junior, youth and most recently adult categories. He also holds the title of champion winner (three-time champion of champions) in the equestrian competition sailors held by the Peruvian Breeders' Association and the owner of the Horse De Paso, which caused him to participate in the opening of the Pan American Games - Lima 2019.
Dayanna Ñahuis has over 17 years of artistic experience in Marinera and 5 years of experience as a teacher. Dayanna has been looking for national and world titles after the toddler category and has been on the podium on several occasions. In this last edition, he was able to achieve a great goal.
Despite the capacity limitations and guidelines provided by the Peruvian State on social distancing to prevent the spread of COVID-19, La Marinera's practice has never stopped. “All training to prepare for the competition was carried out according to the protocol. Provided by the Ministry of Health”, says Mauricio, who has been running a dance academy for three years.
“Since the pandemic began around academic classes, classes on video conferencing platforms such as Zoom have migrated all of our training to a 100% virtual environment. Thus, Marinera was accompanied by hundreds of Peruvians who dared to break geographical boundaries and practice at home. I had students from countries such as Japan, the United States, and Canada.” Mauricio said.
These results culminate in traditional competition driven by voyages on a global scale 60 years ago. Mauricio and Dayana, the current ambassadors of Northern Marinera, will represent the Libertad Club in various national and international presentations throughout 2022. Mauricio and Dayana are national pride and representative of Peru.
