Washington, 15 Mar Texas Governor Greg Abbott has replaced the head of the Texas National Guard, two-star General Tracy Norris, who was in charge of the controversial “Lone Star” immigration operation on the Mexican border. More than 10,000 members of that state's National Guard have been assigned to surveillance of the Texas-Mexico border as part of the operation launched in March 2021 by Republican Abbott. The purpose of the mission, according to the governor, was to support local authorities in guarding the border to prevent the entry of documented immigrants, but it has been widely criticized by migrant groups and even deployed soldiers who have sought to form a union. At the end of December, the independent newspaper Military Times reported that at least four members of the Texas National Guard had died, allegedly by suicide, accentuating criticism of indefinite calls for service. A recent survey by military chaplains released by the Military Times found that more than half of the 250 National Guard members interviewed are unhappy with the planning and execution of the operation. Thirty per cent complained about the length of displacement at the border and a similar number were dissatisfied with the impact this has on their families and the loss of wages. The survey was conducted in January among members of the southern battalion that is almost entirely part of the 432 Air Force Expeditionary Group that is part of the operation. At the end of February, several members of the National Guard began meetings with the Texas State Employees Union for a possible union in defense of their rights. In a press release, Governor Abbott indicated that General Norris's two-year term ended in February and to command that National Guard he appointed two-star general Thomas Suelzer, who was formerly in charge of the Air National Guard. In her announcement, Abbott made no reference to criticism of Norris's administration, noting that the general “has faithfully served the Texas Military Department with dignity since January 2019,” and thanked him for his work.
