After the results of the presidential consultations were announced, former President Álvaro Uribe published a trill calling for an urgent meeting: “In the most respectful way the current and year-old parliamentarians who were elected are cited” for these legislative elections.
In addition, he called on Oscar Iván Zuluaga, the party leadership; the executives and members of the National Directorate and the committees of the far-right movement to join the meeting that was taking place in the morning hours of this March 14.
After that meeting, the Uribismo candidate for the presidential elections appeared in a video announcing the withdrawal of his campaign and making official the addition of the Democratic Center to the campaign of the winner of the Team for Colombia, Fico Gutiérrez, which until a few weeks ago was rumored to be the other profile of the right-wing movements in the country.
In the recording, Zuluaga talks about his campaign and his proposals, assuring that he has defended his convictions and political beliefs, in addition, he added that given the results and the electoral landscape he decided to withdraw from the race.
“For the sake of Colombia, I have made the personal decision to renounce my personal candidacy, for the Democratic Center to accompany the presidential aspiration of Federico Gutiérrez, I do so without political or autocratic calculations, without expecting anything in return and with sincere enthusiasm,” he said, adding that in this way the party remains in the freedom to make appropriate and timely decisions.
Finally, he thanked his followers, his team and his family for the help and support: “Only together can we preserve democracy and freedom.”
