World Championships Dominate 2017 Sport Calendar -- Federations Focus

(ATR) Qualifications for PyeongChang 2018 highlight this year’s winter world championships across the globe.

With a little more than a year left until the next Winter Olympics and Paralympics in South Korea, winter sports federations are getting their athletes and organizers prepared for the marquee event.

Two of the upcoming world championships will also serve as test events for the PyeongChang 2018 Games. The ISU World Single Distance Speed Skating Championships will take place from Feb. 9-12 while the World Wheelchair Curling Championships take place from Mar. 4-11, both at Gangneung Ice Arena.

Feb. 9-12: World Single Distances Speed Skating Championships – Gangneung, Korea

Feb. 17-26: IBSF World Championships – Koenigsee, Germany

Feb. 21-March 5: FIS Nordic World Ski Championships – Lahti, Finland

Feb. 25-26: World Sprint Speed Skating Championships – Calgary, Canada

March 31-April 7: Women’s Ice Hockey World Championships – Plymouth, Michigan

April 1-9: Ford World Men’s Curling Championship – Edmonton, Canada

May 5-21: IIHF Men’s Ice Hockey World Championship – Cologne, Germany & Paris, France

While the Olympic focus shifts to winter sports in PyeongChang, summer Olympic federations will also earn their share of the spotlight in 2017 with a number of world championships.

The 2017 summer sport season features the FINA World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, IAAF World Athletics Championships in London and AIBA World Boxing Championships in Hamburg, Germany among numerous other competitions.

Bid cities for the 2024 Summer Olympics are also staging world championships in 2017. Budapest, Hungary is hosting the FINA championships while Paris, France is hosting the World Handball and United World Wresting Championships.

Los Angeles will likely be involved with preparations for the Weightlifting World Championships taking place in Anaheim, California if it is awarded the host city contract by the IOC in September.
