WFDF Approves Transgender Athlete Policy

The World Flying Disc Federation ("WFDF") is pleased to announce that its Board of Directors, based on the recommendation of its Medical and Anti-Doping Committee (MADC), has approved a WFDF transgender athlete policy.

"The chair of our Medical and Anti-Doping Committee and board member Dr. Jamie Nuwer guided us through the thorough evaluation process since the International Olympic Committee Consensus Meeting on Sex Reassignment and Hyperandrogenism in November 2015," stated WFDF President Robert "Nob" Rauch. "There has been a growing recognition of the importance of autonomy of gender identity in society worldwide. It is necessary to ensure insofar as possible that transgender athletes are not excluded from the opportunity to participate in flying disc sports events, while ensuring fair competition for all other athletes. This policy is designed to help protect our transgender athletes’ rights to participate in the gender division in which they identify at WFDF events."

"We strive to protect our transgender athletes by creating clear guidelines with minimally invasive requirements for TUE submission," added WFDF MADC chair Dr. Jamie Nuwer on the policy. "These guidelines were developed by our Medical and Anti-Doping Committee which includes an endocrinologist with experience managing transgender hormone therapy as well as members of the GLBT community. We reviewed multiple organizations’ policies, including the IOC framework, in determining competition eligibility for athletes in-transition. With our policy linked below, we aim to balance the transgender athletes’ rights with fairness towards competitors."
