Paris 2024 delegation makes official visit to Marseille

A senior Paris 2024 delegation including a number of French Olympians is today visiting the Mediterranean port city of Marseille, reaffirming the strong national focus of the bid and the commitment to host a Games’ for the whole of France.

The Paris 2024 delegation in Marseille is being led by and includes:

Bernard Lapasset (Co-Chair, Paris 2024 Bid Committee)

Tony Estanguet (Co-Chair, Paris 2024 Bid Committee)

Anne Hidalgo (Mayor of Paris)

Thierry Braillard (Secretary of State for Sport)

Etienne Thobois (CEO, Paris 2024)

Denis Masseglia (President of the French NOC)

Joined by the Mayor of Marseille, the Paris 2024 delegation will hold a Board Meeting at the Palais du Pharo and is visiting the proposed venue for Olympic Sailing at the picturesque Marina Marseille. The conditions at the Marina will provide the optimal platform for world class competition at the 2024 Games and the stunning seascape will offer an incredible sun-drenched backdrop – providing amazing broadcast opportunities. The delegation also visited the proposed Marseille city centre live site.

Home to the newly renovated, state-of-the-art, Stade Velodrome – which will host Olympic Football in 2024 as well as six matches including a Semi-Final at EURO 2016 – Marseille is an international gateway in the Mediterranean basin and its reputation as a hub for world class sport and rich culture and its diverse and cosmopolitan nature makes the city a great asset for the Paris 2024 bid.

Co-Chairman of Paris 2024, Bernard Lapasset, said:

This is a bid for France and the French people and we are encouraged by our conversations and the progress we have made today. We are very impressed with Marina Marseille and the Stade Velodrome – these outstanding venues will add a great deal to what will be a fantastic sporting spectacle should we be given the opportunity to host the Games in 2024.

Welcoming the Paris 2024 delegation, the Mayor of Marseille, Jean-Claude Gaudin, said:

As the two largest cities in France, Paris and Marseille have a strong and unique bond and we’re delighted to play an important part in the bid by providing two incredible venues in Marina Marseille and the Stade Velodrome. The Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, said:
