The Sochi Olympic Flame lighting ceremony took place in Olympia, Greece on Sunday, commencing thelongest torch relay in Olympic history. The journey from Greece across the length of Russia, and even to outer space, will end in Sochi February 7, 2014.

Artistic Gymnastics World Championships
The International Gymnastics Federation opens the44th Artistic Gymnastics World Championships today inAntwerp, Belgium.
The Artistic World Championships will only feature individual competition and no team events. More than 400 gymnasts from 76 nations are expected to compete through October 6.
USOC Media Summit
The United States Olympic Committee Media Summit began Sunday and continues through Wednesday in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Over 100 Team USA hopefuls for the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games are participating in the event.
Islamic Solidarity Games
The Islamic Solidarity Games opened September 22 in Palembang, Indonesia. An estimated 6,000 athletes from 55 nations are competing in disciplines such as archery, athletics, gymnastics, karate, and taekwondo.Competition ends Tuesday.
DOSB and Munich 2022
Germany's Olympic Committee decides today whether to back a bid for Munich for the 2022 Winter Olympics.Munich hosted the Summer Olympic Games in 1972, but lost in the bid race to host the 2018 Winter Olympic Games to Pyeongchang.
World Archery
The 2013 World Archery Championships began Sunday in Belek. The city is part of Turkey's Antalya province.Competition ends on October 6.
FIFA and the 2022 World Cup
FIFA's executive board meets on Thursday to decide whether officially move the date of the 2022 World Cup. Qatar is still set to stage the event. Concerns were raised over hosting the tournament in summer as temperatures could reach 50 degrees Celsius.
East Asian Games
The 2013 East Asian Games will begin in Tianjin, China on October 6. Athletes from nine East Asian nations will compete in 262 events across 22 disciplines. Competition ends on October 15.
