(ATR) A lion named GOLEO VI will serve as the mascot for the 2006 FIFA World Cupâ?¢.
Organizers unveiled the character this weekend, along with Pille, an anthropomorphic, talking ball that will be the lionâ??s constant companion.
The pair of mascots was introduced by Franz Beckenbauer, leader of the Germanyâ??s World Cup organizing committee and Brazil soccer legend Pele on German TV.
The mascot is the creation of the Jim Henson Company, the same firm which gave birth to the Muppets.
World Cup promoters say a TV series is planned for the mascots, which will make their first in-person appearance at a match in Leipzig later in the week.
