The U.S. will be a leader in the international fight against doping in sport promises Dr. Rahul Gupta, the new director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP). Also known by the title of “drug czar” the post is part of the White House, nominated by the president and confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
Dr. Gupta is the first physician to hold the post since it was created 50 years ago. He is a former public health director for the state of West Virginia where he was on the frontline of the battle against opioid abuse. His career in family medicine and public health includes a stint as science director for the March of Dimes.
The ONDCP director represents the U.S. on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Gupta, who was confirmed for the position in December, has already taken part in WADA meetings as a foundation board member.
