(ATR) Oscar Pistorius competed in his first Paralympic Games in 2004 at the age of 18.

Born without fibulas in either leg, doctors amputated both legs below the knee when Pistorius was eleven months old.During his sporting career, Pistorius earned the nickname "Blade Runner" for the prosthetic legs he used during competition.

Pistorius took home three gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics and two gold medals at the 2012 Paralympics. In total, Pistorius has won eight Paralympic gold medals.

Also in 2012, Pistorius became the first amputee runner to compete in an Olympic Games.

In February 2013, Pistorius was charged in the shooting death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. In addition to murder, he faced three other weapons-related charges.

On Sept. 12, Pistorius was found guilty of culpable homicide and one weapons charge involving a shooting incident at a restaurant. He could now face a maximum of 15 years in prison.
