BP is working with the British Olympic Association (BOA) to showcase the support of Team GB athletes for helping to make London 2012 the most sustainable Games possible.
Target Neutral, BP’s not-for-profit carbon offsetting programme, will, over the coming weeks, be an integral part of the Team GB prep camp in Loughborough as Team GB athletes arrive to receive their official London 2012 kit. Supporting a more sustainable Games is important to the BOA and Team GB has signed up to BP’s Target Neutral London 2012 programme. The prep camp provides an opportunity for these athletes to show their personal support by signing up to offset their travel, creating awareness of the environmental impact of all journeys to and from the Games.
As Team GB athletes arrive to collect their kit they will spend time in the BP Target Neutral infinity room to "leave their mark" in helping to make London 2012 the most sustainable games possible and "leave no trace" by offsetting their travel carbon footprint to the Games. Here, they will learn about carbon offsetting in an engaging and fun way, have their photo taken in the Target Neutral photo booth (which can then be posted on Facebook), tweet or write a message of support.
Launched in September, the Target Neutral Olympics programme is setting out to create a world record of the most number of people offsetting their carbon to a single event – London 2012. So, other than athletes all ticketholders going to the Games are encouraged to register with the programme and BP will offset their carbon through Target Neutral at no cost to themselves.
ANDY HUNT, CHIEF EXECUTIVE & CHEF DE MISSION TEAM GB LONDON 2012 commented: "BP's Target Neutral initiative has really helped in London's ambition to host the most sustainable Games possible. Their presence at the Team GB Preparation Camp demonstrates just how much of a difference this initiative will make to the legacy of our Games. Team GB has signed up to offset athlete travel to the Games and we are really encouraging ticketholders to sign up for free too".
The programme has also been working with each of BP’s athlete ambassadors (Olympic athletes Jessica Ennis, William Sharman, Lizzie Armitstead and Paralympic athletes Richard Whitehead, Shelly Woods, Stefanie Reid) on their journey to the Games, showing them how to make changes to their everyday lives as well as the fuel to get around whilst training and offsetting their carbon emissions from driving.
JESSICA ENNIS, TEAM GB HEPTATHLETE & BP TARGET NEUTRAL ATHLETE AMBASSADOR said: "BP's Target Neutral is so simple to be part of and it’s free. With us all working together we can really make a difference and help make London 2012 the most sustainable Games possible. So come on, it’s quick and easy to do! If you're a ticketholder, please sign up online and get involved."
BP Target Neutral is also offering to offset the carbon footprint of all ticketed spectator journeys to and from the Olympic and Paralympic Games for free. It’s quick and easy to do – ticketholders just need to visit the BP Target Neutral website www.bptargetneutral.com/london2012 or sign up through or the new Facebook app http://on.fb.me/BPtargetneutral to have the carbon emissions of their travel to London 2012 offset for free.
ANDREA ABRAHAMS, GLOBAL DIRECTOR FOR TARGET NEUTRAL said: "We believe this mass offset opportunity will raise awareness about the challenge we all face in living more sustainably and will engage people who might never before have thought about the carbon impact of their travel choices. The athletes we have worked with so far, have been inspiring in their effort to raise awareness and take personal action on carbon."
As the London 2012 official Carbon Offset Partner, BP Target Neutral will be providing the administration and funds to offset the carbon emissions from Games-related travel of ticketholders. The more people that sign up, the more Target Neutral can support low carbon development projects worldwide.
SEB COE, Chair of LOCOG said: "Sustainability underpins all of our plans – and has done since the bid. BP’s Target Neutral scheme is a fantastic opportunity for millions to offset their carbon footprint and help London 2012 to inspire positive social, economic and environmental change for the future."
PETER MATHER, UK & VICE PRESIDENT, EUROPE REGION BP, said: "We want to encourage people to play their part in tackling the impact of their travel on our environment. Target Neutral’s overriding ambition is that, through collective action, individuals can work together to make a real difference to the environment as they seek to reduce their carbon footprint, and then offset what is left.
All carbon emissions will be offset from a portfolio of six carbon offset projects that have been chosen to represent each continental region participating in the Games. These projects have been carefully selected and are compliant with ICROA Code of Best Practice.
Ticketholders should visit www.bptargetneutral.com/london2012 or Facebook page http://on.fb.me/BPtargetneutral to register their journey to the Olympics and be part of making London 2012 the most sustainable Games possible.
