To promote Gwangju, the Korean city aiming towards becoming an international Mecca of sports, and 2015 Gwangju Summer Universiade (GU 2015), which will be held in the city of Gwangju, the Universiade official mascot, 'Nuribi', has been busy visiting domestic and international festivals.

'Nuribi' was first introduced to the public in April of 2012 as a symbol of the Gwangju Universiade by the 2015 Gwangju Summer Universiade Organizing Committee(GUOC 2015).

Since then, Nuribi has been promoting GU 2015 as well as its host city, Gwangju, at various sporting events and local festivals such as World University Badminton Championships, Gwangju Biennale exhibition, Gwangju Universiade national college tour, and many more.

Especially during the GU 2015 college tour, Nuribi proved its popularity when bombarded with photo requests from students, fulfilling its role as promoter of GU 2015 and receiving much attention and positive responses with its friendly character.

GUOC 2015 will be using the mascot Nuribi at events not only held in Gwangju, such as World Human Rights Cities Forum, JCI Asia Pacific Forum, Gwangju Biennale exhibition, and The World Korean Business Convention, but also at multiple domestic and international events such as the 2013 Suncheon Bay Garden Expo, which opened on April 20th, and the 4th Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games, which will be held in Incheon upcoming June.

In July, GUOC 2015 will also be advertising GU 2015 to athletes, delegates, and spectators during campaigns at the 2013 Kazan Summer Universiade, with the mascot Nuribi taking part in promotional activities.

The name of the Gwangju Universiade mascot 'Nuribi' is a combination of the Korean words 'nuri' for world and 'bi' for fly. Nuribi is to be a messenger of light that spreads enthusiasm and challenging spirit to world's youth. It serves as a symbol to introduce the visions of the 'EPIC'(Eco-friendliness, Peace, IT, and Culture) and connotes the meaning of brightening the dream and hope of students, who will become future leaders.

Nuribi has the 'wings of light'(five bluish wings on the right signify the five great oceans while the six reddish ones on the left symbolizes the six continents) attached to its head and the overlapped colors denote the harmony and friendship among the world's youth.

Wings of light shaped like the letter 'U' embodies the meaning of the Universiade.

The five stars on Nuribi's chest symbolizes the host organization of the Universiade, FISU (Federation Internationale du Sport Universitaire; International University Sports Federation).

To eschew the old traditions of animal mascots and follow the new trend such as 2012 London Olympic (Wenlock and Mandeville) and 2011 Shenzen Universiade(UU), Nuribi has been created to accentuate a younger-looking and more lively spirit well fitting the international youth's sporting festivity.
